"Frank Tomlin" Bells

From previous reports most EAR members will be aware that in 2008, thanks to the generous bequest from the late Frank Tomlin, the region purchased a set of 12 Malmark Bells. These bells are currently available on a period loan to any registered member who wishes to try to set-up a new team and details of the scheme are available from Susan Duke.

Helen Wetherfield from Broxbourne HBR was the first to accept the challenge and has been using the bells in primary schools in the Waltham Forest and Harlow area since late last year.

On Sunday 5th July, St James Primary School in Harlow, held their School Fete and members of Broxbourne HBR went along to support Helen and some of the children in showing parents and others what hand bell ringing is all about. The children played a couple of tunes as well as demonstrating "lapping" and the performance was well received.

St James Primary have access to a small set of Whitechapel bells which are currently in a very poor state of maintenance. It is hoped that the children being able to use the Frank Tomlin bells will renew interest in hand bell ringing in the community and perhaps lead to action to refurbish their own set.
